Below you can see illustrations I created for the book Akbara and other fairy tales by Tschingis Aitmatow. These were first sketched digitally and then transferred to linocut. Printed, scanned and digitally retouched.
The little monkey with the schoolbag from Tschingis Aitmatow
"One day, the girl was on her way home from school, happily singing her songs and, like all schoolgirls, holding the schoolbag in which she kept her books and exercise books tightly in her hand. Suddenly, a strange, unknown old woman stepped into her path."
"When the nets were distributed, the poachers made a terrible noise, shooting into the air, beating on drums, shouting and whistling. And all the animals, especially the monkeys, jumped and ran away in fright."
"Militia cars and motorbikes chased after them. Sirens blared, engines howled. "
The luck of the three poor girls from Tschingis Aitmatow
"What are we supposed to do? Where should we go? We can't stay here. Where should we look for our parents?"
"As she approached, the eldest dropped her comb and said: "Grow, little comb, become a comb until you are as big as the dense forest. So that the man-eater can't catch up with us." And indeed, a dense forest grew up immediately.
...
Then the middle one dropped her glass beads and said: "Sprout, little beads, sprout, until you are as big as the mountains and the man-eater can never catch up with us. " And indeed, tall mountains sprouted from the beads.
...
But then the youngest dropped her little mirror and said: "Spread out, my little mirror, spread out until you are a deep blue lake and separate us from the man-eater.""
"Here were the juices, there the ketame, fine pirogues, round, freshly baked flatbreads.
...
all kinds of vegetables and fruit - beans, sultanas, nuts, pomegranates and much more; there was simply everything. And the girls threw themselves on the many delicacies."
